A High Security Policy Change

By

Nikki

Nikki writes from a prison in NSW.

An image of dark clouds against the night sky, with streaks of white light throughout.

In June 2025, a new policy was implemented affecting the low classification placement of inmates in Queensland on offences of manslaughter and attempted murder. As a result, a large number of successful inmates were removed from low security facilities and forced back into high security, never to progress again.

‍

So this is how the government promotes positive rehabilitation and reintegration by restricting and isolating long-termers?!

‍

On a positive note, Prisoners’ Legal Service (PLS) is gathering those affected by the policy and making a group claim through the appropriate channels. So if you have been affected, don’t give up hope and join the fight. Write to PLS with your story or ring them.

‍

Please don’t feel like you just have to take this change: fight it and get involved. Have a voice and make a change.

‍

Thank you and stay strong my fellow people.

Each day I wake up in here I’m re-shocked, so to speak…how on Earth has life gotten to this point for me? For a while there I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out and tell me I’d been “Punk’d”.

So the parole referred me to seek out a security classification to be possibly considered for low security.

What’s been happening at your prison at the moment? Our frequency of ‘lock-ins’ is increasing to about 2 per week while staff do training for the handover.
