
Benjamin Aitken is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply influenced by personal experience in prison and a commitment to social change. Aitken is a five-time finalist in the Archibald Prize, and has also been honoured with the Tony Fini Foundation Prize at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. In addition to his artistic practice, Aitken runs Nicholas Projects, an artist-run initiative that fosters community and professional growth by hosting itinerant exhibitions that support artists at various stages of their careers.
Prisoners doing long stretches often face deep psychological and social isolation. Years away from family can mean missing key milestones, children growing up, parents aging, relationships ending. The world outside doesn’t wait.

Even before going to prison, I was drawn to prison movies. Now, after my time inside, I’m even more captivated.
