Staying Out Is the Hard Part

To About Time,

There is a word called “recidivism” and if you don’t know, it’s the rate of return to prison.

Why would anybody want to come back to the system and add to that statistic?

I have been here at Ravenhall for nearly 2 years now and the rate of return back here of prisoners is crazy. One prisoner has been here 5 times since I got here, one other 3 times, a few others 3 times and a whole bunch twice. It’s strange I reckon.

I’ve been here since 2024 and I never want to come back here, ever again. I am trying my hardest to rehabilitate and I’m making the most out of my time here by working, doing clinical programs, education and courses, AA, art, helping others, cleaning and approx. 2–3 weeks after ya’s published my article I got a letter from my daughter and she is now on my phone list.

I have a pretty good understanding of some prisoner’s reasons: drugs or alcohol, mental health, IVOs, not having the right support they need, housing issues and many other reasons. Some I don’t agree with either.

Some prisoners just blame everybody else for them being here. There are pathways to take to try stay out, like do some education to be work ready when you’re released, do clinical programs and courses to benefit yourself, try AA or NA – it’s free and beneficial I reckon. Speak to housing people at your location and go on a housing registry/list, work to gain some skills and knowledge, stay away from negative inmates and jail politics and try to really understand what put you in here.

Corrections can only assist with trying to rehabilitate you so you don’t come back, as it’s up to the individual to stay out of prison. The message I am trying to get across and the point I’m making is don’t be a part of the statistics for recidivism and don’t waste your time you have on this great planet by being behind prison walls – it’s not fun to be forever in a cell.
