The big idea behind this painting is to display a very strong, tough Australian sportswoman. Through her athleticism she has helped to inspire a huge number of young Australian girls to take up soccer as their favourite game. I do not care about anyone’s opinion about her, but Kerr to me is the most decorated sportswoman in Australian sports, if not in the world. Reason being, she is the only female soccer player in the world to have won the Golden Boot in three different leagues and three different countries. Because of my love of controversial figures and Sam Kerr’s audacity to withstand harassment and defamation by United Kingdom police, this inspired me to paint her as a symbol of solidarity and what she stands for as a strong woman.
My inspiration for this artwork also came from watching her play during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-finals against England. Down a goal after the first half, Kerr equalized for Australia with her first goal of the tournament, which was widely praised as one of the best goals of the tournament.
