Mother

By

Biannca

Biannca writes from a prison in Victoria.

Willy Pleasance

What did you see when you looked at me?

‍

Just a little girl, I had no voice

‍

You kept me down without a choice

‍

You gave heartache and pain

‍

Said I was your endless shame.

‍

You stole my youth, my childhood

‍

Stole who I could have been, stealing my motherhood

‍

What happened to you to treat me that way

‍

With anger and hate, you kept me at bay.

‍

Just a girl wanting your love

‍

Always praying to the Heavens above

‍

I used to wish you loved me too

‍

Now I know, I was nothing to you.

‍

Now, I’m not so little and not so weak

‍

I use my voice with courage to speak.

‍

You tried to bury me but wonderfully I grew

‍

A life in darkness, now my light shines through

‍

My once broken heart you no longer held

‍

This story of loss had to be told

‍

Gone is the girl I used to be

‍

Gone is the hold you had over me.

‍

Now, what do you see when you look at me?

Clearly you only have to nominate ‘time travel’ as the subject of a writing competition to get people thinking.

Time, for me, was at first just “the clock on the wall” at high school. When is lunch? When will this test finish? And when is home time?
